“Is Your Mouth Getting You In Trouble?”  2-18-18 Outline

“It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think

you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.”

Mark Twain

“The ability to speak several languages is an asset, but the

ability to keep your mouth shut in any language is priceless!”

- Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV)

- Psalm 141:3 (ESV)

- Proverbs 21:23 (ESV)

“Be careful little mouth what you say.....”

The Mouth - consists of two regions, the vestibule and the

moral cavity proper.

Vestibule: a passage, hall, or room between the outer door

and the interior of a building : lobby.

The lips are the vestibule to your mouth!

Psalm 51:15 (ESV)

Psalm 141:3 (ESV)

Matthew 12:36 (ESV)

An uncontrolled mouth can:

  1. Wound

      - Words can and do hurt more than sticks and stones.

      - Women, by nature, are more intuitive than me and

words can damage a relationship. (EX: “Good steak!

          Where’d you get it?” Guy-Kroger/ Wife-Why, what’s

          wrong with it?)

      - “How can...beautiful & stupid at same time?” “God

made me beautiful so you could love me, and

stupid so I could love you!”

      - Sees mules/“Next of kin?”/“Yes, by marriage!”

      - Prov. 12:18 “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but

the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

      - An ill-spoken word can wound one’s spirit, which

           can inhibit true fellowship.

  2. Instigate

      - Proverbs 6:16-19 (ESV)

      - Words can begin a chain reaction of negativity,

           if not careful.

      - EX: Monroe Norris’ sales technique (“I think the

guy learned the trade before he got out of the

           Penal Farm!”)

       - Instigate encouragment even in negative situations.

             EX: “We’re gonna lose!”/“Think positive!”/“I KNOW

              we’re gonna lose!”

  3. Demoralize

      - Be careful what you speak, especially your personal

         assessment of others.

      - EX: Revival/lady sang/CD?/very grateful/story about

older sister/sing like a frog/didn’t sing for years.

      - 1 Thess. 5:11 “Therefore encourage one another and

build one another up, just as you are doing.”

      - EX: Parents/“Will be glad when they’re out of here”/

“You’re dumb!”/“You’re nothing but trash!”) God

doesn’t make mistakes or make trash!

      - DAD - “Never have understood why folks will have

children and then not want to be around them!”

      - Prov. 12:25 “An anxious heart weighs a man down,

but a kind word cheers him up.”

  4. Enrage

      - When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember the

         Fire Department usually uses water!

      - And, there is a time to speak and a time to keep

             your lips zipped! (Eccl. 3:7)

      - Dad - “Have you taken your pill, yet?”

      - Prov. 15:1 “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a

              harsh word stirs up anger.”

      - Col. 4:6 “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned

with salt, so that you may know how you ought to

             answer each person.”

How to have a mouth that honors God:

  1. Be filled with His Spirit.

      - Ephesians 5:18 (KJV)

          - When you are filled with His Spirit you can’t be filled

             with anything else!

      - James 1:26 (ESV)

      - Proverbs 16:24 (ESV)

      - Proverbs 15:4 (ESV)

      - In such a time, don’t be filled with fear!

EX: Fear can be a motivator-guy falling in grave.

  2. See from God’s perspective.

      - James 1:19-20 (ESV)

          - God sees and knows the bigger picture. (Topigraphical

map of Smokies. Helps to see the bigger pic)

      - James 3:5-8 (ESV)

      - Matthew 12:34 (ESV)

      - EX: man on island/everything burns/“We saw the smoke!”

  3. Think upon proper things.

      - Philippians 4:8 (KJV)

         - Dad’s favorite verse. “Anybody can criticize, but

            encouragement is what they need.”

      - Proverbs 13:3 (ESV)

      - Proverbs 17:27 (ESV)

      - Colossians 3:8 (ESV)

      - Being negative & critical is a choice!

EX: Sin is a choice/Today there’s a lot of talk

about whether or not people are born a certain

way/if the Bible calls something a sin, then you

have a choice-either twist the Word or auit

            sinning/choose wisely.

Psalm 19:14 (KJV)

“Is Your Mouth Getting You In Trouble?”

If so, it’s not God’s fault!

Would you honor Him today by laying your mouth

on the altar and allowing God to speak through you?
